Guests get involved in hatchery program
Open from April to October, Nanook Lodge provides an intimate setting hosting only sixteen guests at a time. In mid-August a most unique event begins at the Lodge. Nanook Lodge has become the leader in restoration of local salmon stocks by spearheading a brood stock capture and rearing of salmon. An adjacent hatchery is home to 100,000-200,000 salmon each year that are raised to be released back into the wild. The Pacific Salmon Foundation and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, local contributors and the leadership of the lodge support this program. While up at the Phillips River, much time is spent educating the lodge guests about salmon restoration and viewing the local Grizzly bear population. Guests are excited to fish in the morning and then spend the rest of the day at the river capturing the brood stock. Involvement in this program provides the guests with an intimate connection to the ocean wilds; they have given something back to the fishery.
Nanook also offers a terrific fly-fishing program. With the use of helicopters, anglers are taken to many remote rivers for fly or spin-cast fishing. Cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden char are the species of choice, which are caught and released. It is not uncommon for an angler to have 20-30 hook-ups daily. Trout can weigh up to 4-5 pounds, and the dollies can get over 10 lbs. Besides the angling, spectacular scenery is viewed from the air, including glaciers, goats, bears eagles and the local inlets.
